Hippo Waste
UI design for a large scale website overhaul

Overview
Hippo Waste is a well known national brand, most recognisable for their signature skip bags found in stores across the UK. During my time at Make Agency I worked as part of the web team on a complete redesign of their website. My role was as UI designer, working alongside senior designers to translate the existing UX wireframes into full visual designs using the design system and brand guidelines set by the senior team. My primary responsibility was the checkout process and account pages across the site.

The Challenge
This was by far the largest project I had worked on at that point — a site with a significant number of pages and a complex web of user flows to consider. Whilst the UX had already been planned out by Make's own UX designer, getting up to speed with the scale of the project was a steep learning curve. A big part of the challenge was maintaining consistency and quality across such a large Figma file, as well as getting to grips with the complexity of the checkout flows. In total I was responsible for designing and prototyping over ten different checkout flows — each one needing to be considered individually while remaining consistent with the wider design system.
The Solution
Working closely with two senior designers I produced UI designs that were faithful to both the Hippo Waste brand and the UX direction set out from the start. Each design went through the senior team for sign off, which meant maintaining a high and consistent standard throughout. All checkout flows were fully prototyped in Figma — including hover states and linked pages — to demonstrate exactly how each flow would function for the user. Towards the end of the project I was also involved in preparing designs for developer handover, separating out block variations to make the build process as clear and efficient as possible for the dev team.

The Result
The project resulted in a complete set of UI designs ready for development. Beyond the deliverable itself it was one of the most valuable learning experiences of my career so far — developing my UI skills, my approach to Figma file management and my understanding of what it takes to collaborate effectively on a large scale project alongside project managers, a head of web and senior designers.
